Working at Frog Bottom Farm

Interested in working here? Each year we hire a small crew of seasonal workers to join us in the work of planting vegetables, harvesting them, sharing them with customers through the CSA/farm share program and farmers markets, and tending to our farm animals.  We are addicted to the conversation and community that develop because of having workers, and we neither could nor would do what we do alone.

Please know: the hours are long, especially in late summer and early fall. The work is hard and often repetitive, and is likely to test your endurance – but that’s also what makes it fun and satisfying! We spend much of early spring in the greenhouse, and lots of time tending to vegetables in the field in late spring and early summer.  Vegetable production is at its height in late summer and early fall, and most of our time in those months is spent picking, irrigating, and sorting for the CSA and farmers markets.

Frog Bottom Farm is located in a quiet town, with a library, post office and general store within walking distance.  Within a short drive are bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, live music venues, a movie theater, a state park, the James River, and many colleges and universities.

Living accommodations are provided.  You have almost unlimited access to farm vegetables and eggs. Additional food expenses are minimal.  All workers have one day off each week.  We pay hourly and our wages are very competitive. We do not provide health insurance.

To put it another way …

We think you’ll enjoy working for us if:

  • you’re willing to work long hours with not much time to get off the farm
  • you’re willing to learn about being very efficient with your time
  • you want to work outside
  • you want to learn from people who are making a good living from sustainable, for-profit use of the land
  • you can be committed to your fellow workers by showing up on time for work and working hard
  • you’re interested in living in community with other cool folks
  • you want to eat loads of fresh, seasonal, delicious food that you’ve helped to grow
  • you want to save some money – living expenses are minimal, and there’s not much time to spend what you earn!

Working for us is not a good choice if:

  • any of the above turns you off
  • you want a lot of time to yourself
  • you want a social life away from the farming community
  • you want more “normal” work hours

Life here is busy, nourishing, and lots of fun. We sure hope you’ll consider being a part of things. For more information or for an application packet, please get in touch.
